Does my company have to be licensed if we are just a subcontractor?
Subcontractors must hold their own license in the appropriate class and specialty for the work they are going to perform.
Contractors who hire unlicensed or improperly licensed subcontractors are in violation of the board’s regulations and subject to disciplinary action.
It is the responsibility of contractors to ensure that their subs hold the right type of license for the work they are providing. Any questions on the licensing status of a contractor, tradesman or certificate holder, should be directed to the VA board’s licensing staff at (804) 367-8511, or checking the website www.dpor.virginia.gov.

There have been several companies fined for Lead Paint violations, who were not complying with the rule of education and certification.
I. State of VA DPOR Authorized Courses: » 8 Hour Prelicensing Business Course (Required for all initial contractor license applications) - we hold this class 3 times a month.
» HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing courses on Formal Vocational Training (from 40 to a maximum 240 hours to qualify for the PSI Journeyman exams).
II. State of MD DLLR Authorized Courses:
» Certified Home Inspector Course (72 training hours; required for classroom curriculum) - we hold classes every Tuesday & Thursday night over a 10-week period .
III. EPA Lead RRP Authorized Training Course:
- You will your EPA Lead Certificate after completing the 8-hr class.
*EPA accreditation: The Courses are approved for the purposes of certification under Section 402 of TSCA for the respective discipline.
IV. Licensing Exam Prep Courses:
We offer the 5-day class in the NIGHT (Tysons Corner) and EVENING (Silver Spring).
> Night course (6-10 pm); every Monday (+ every other Thursdays).
> Evening course (4-8 pm); every Thursday.
*8-hour Prelicensing certificate required (see Package Course if you have not taken the VA 8-hour Prelicensing Course)
Every Wednesday night (6-10 pm).
» MD MHIC Exam Prep
Offered weekly - Two Day prep to pass the PSI test; every Tuesday (4-8 pm), or in Spanish every Friday - invest 8 hours, then passing the PSI exam right-away. Offering the MHIC in one-day (monthly) in Tysons Corner
Clients who pass VA Class-A; the rest of 45 questions of MD regulations. » Electrical Master License Prep (VA & MD) - course restarts in February 10 (in Tysons Corner). Total 30-hour course over 10 nights.
» Master HVAC Exam Prep (VA & MD) starting TODAY in Tysons Corner. Total 30 hour course (10 nights). Orientation w/ Basic Math test will be held during the 1st class.
» Journeyman (Formal Vocational Training) for HVAC & Electrician course (max. 240 hours; authorized by VA DPOR) will start in February in Tysons Corner.
» VA BLD Contractor Exam Prep course (16 hours) -Class quarterly to open for 16 hour course. (Passing you the 3+1 text material w/ questions, after your registration).
· Total 16 hour courses (4 Saturday mornings; 9-1 pm) for passing the PSI test. Cost (now $695) includes all four text materials (3 exam textbooks, one reference book) with class binder. Focused on the latest PSI questions with demos.
- Restarts 1/21 (& every Saturday 9-1 pm), 4 Saturdays.
